July 14th, 2009

Designing is all about ideas and good designs needs the designer to “think out of the box.”  These are Steven Mullenbach’s (from Minneapolis College of Art and Design) recent work.

For each of the design, there is a dialogue between materials. He says he enjoy using new materials in a traditional way or traditional materials in a new way. If you like these designs, you can visit his personal webpage at:

Zen Recliners

July 8th, 2009

“Zen” is a word closely tied with Japanese style. If you have been researching the bedroom furniture, it is likely that you have seen the word “Zen platform bed”. This Zen recliner sofa, designed by Wei-Chieh Hung, comes with a spotless surface and futuristic touch. It will not only let you relax but also takes care of your sagging muscles as well. Prepare a larger space for this chair as it will take a bit more space than a regular recliner.

Frames in Recliners

July 3rd, 2009

If you flip a recliner to the side and look at underneath, you will see the frame of the recliner. Typically, you may see either fiberboard or hard wood frames. Do not assume they are the same. There are a lot of differences in quality, durability between different materials used in the recliner frames.

Fireboard, which is also called Medium Density Fiber Board, does not have much strength for support or repeated movement. It is very vulnerable to liquid spills. Over time, the strain on the material from the screws and bolts will eventually cause it to fail. On the other hand, real wood would be much better for frame and it will certainly hold up much longer, but the price is much higher as well.

Most Comfortable Lounge Chairs In the World?

July 1st, 2009

Recliners and lounge chairs are both comfortable and are great for relaxing and taking a nap. I came across a site listed the most comfortable lounge chairs in the world. I am not sure whether they are really the “most comfortable ones” in the world, but they are certainly worth taking a look at.

Wing Lounge Chair

Designed by Michael Malmborg, this chair is made from open cell visco-elastic foam. The price of this chair is about 7,500 Euro

The Eames Lounge And ottoman

The design of Eames Lounge can be traced back to 1956. Different from the first chair we just talked about, this one is mainly made of plywoood. This one is priced about 3,500 US dollars

35H Relaxation Armchair

Unlike most other lounge chairs, the frame of this armchair is made with cast aluminum. Moreover, the chair adds high-tech pneumatic springs to coordinate the seat and headrest for ultimate comfort. I didn’t find how much this one would cost, but I guess it should be over $3000 US.

O2 Lounge

This chair gives you the benefits of Shiatsu Massage and Aroma O2 Oxygen. So if you are often tired after a day’s of studying or work, this chair will be a great fit. It also comes with multimedia DVD player and hi-fi earphones just in case you are a big music fan. Even though it is an image for advertising, i am pretty sure the lady is truly enjoying the chair.(not faking it)

Upholstery Industry Getting Better?

June 18th, 2009

Although seeing a sales drop of about 22.7%, La-Z-boy still managed to earn a profit of 5.3 million in the quarter ended Apr 25th. It was the first quarterly profit in more than a year for the upholstery and case goods giant. Although the economy still has a long way to go before recovery, a lot of companies still earned a profit for the most recent operating cycle. This is not saying the economy in US has finally turned around but it is due to the fact that a lot of companies have been cutting back on spending and laying off workers to save costs.

The whole industry is still adversely affected by the economy as case goods sales tumbled 19% and the group recorded an operating loss of 1.3 million. For the whole fiscal year ended Apr, total sales fell about 15%.

Make Your Recliners a Gaming Chair

June 1st, 2009

I read an very interesting DIY from Instructables.com, so I want to share with everyone here:

As this person has a small bedroom and he needed spaces for a wood stove, he refitted his recliner into a gaming chair/workstation. This entire project cost the person about only $20.

-Step1:  Attach the monitor with aluminum plate with 75mm and 100mm holes drilled in it.

-Step2: Make vertical adjustment - use a small piece of dog chain that allows you to adjust the arm vertically.

-Step3: Put the 90 deg turn on the piece of the first arm

Here is what it looks like after it is done:

Make the Chair Dynamic

May 29th, 2009

Go Green!! Yes, we are not talking about green bedroom or dining room furniture. Your comfortable chair can be green as well. What’s more, this chair can “grow” over time.

If you take a closer look, you are not sitting on a chair, but sitting on your potted plants. When you sit on a chair like this, you probably won’t feel you are at home. You may feel you are in a jungle while venturing.

This is the quote from the designer Michel Bussien:

“To move further we need to incorporate the living matter that surrounds us. These creations will then redefine the way we reconstruct nature. Only then will we truly move forward. It is time for man and nature to reunite.”

If you want to go wild in your home, get a green chair like and sit on your favorite tree.  Do what the designer suggested -  “re-root”!
